Most Liked

Patrons rave about the fish and chips, often noting the generous portions of perfectly battered cod or haddock, paired with thick-cut chips. The homemade pies and burgers also receive high praise, marked by the quality of locally sourced ingredients. Plus, the welcoming service elevates the dining experience; customers feel like part of the family from the moment they walk in. Families appreciate the kids’ menu and variety of meal options suitable for all ages. Many enjoy the extensive dessert menu, which includes vegan and gluten-free selections that cater to diverse dietary needs. The standout ambience fuses casual dining with a quirky, nostalgic charm, making it a beloved spot in Carlisle.

Most Disliked

While many enjoy the warmth of The Original John's Plaice, some patrons express concern during peak hours due to crowded conditions and busy parking lots. Although service is typically prompt, a few visitors mention longer wait times during busy lunch and dinner rushes. Additionally, while the extensive menu is undoubtedly a highlight, some diners feel overwhelmed by the number of choices and point out that a more concise selection could enhance the experience. It’s essential to keep in mind that the unique, retro decor comes with an air of nostalgia, which might not appeal to everyone’s taste in dining aesthetics. Situated near the main road, street parking may occasionally prove challenging, especially during high traffic times.

As usual a superb pair of meals. It’s so easy to drop off the main road and take a pit stop. Fast & efficient service, the food was piping hot. Based on other Fish & Chip shops in Cumbria, eat in or take away, for the quality of food it is good value.

On my journey from Cheshire, England to Troon, Scotland, I planned a stop at The Original John's Plaice in Carlisle, England. After doing a bit of research, it seemed like the perfect spot for lunch, and I certainly wasn't disappointed! The shop is housed in a standalone, purpose-built building with a rich history of serving top-notch chippy classics. It boasts a decent-sized car park, though it was very busy and I ended up parking in the small car park of the adjacent petrol station. The cod was a generous portion, fresh and encased in a light, crispy batter. The chips were plump and exactly what you'd expect from a quality fish and chip shop. The giant cheese fritter (or cheese savoury) caught my eye immediately due to its size, and it didn’t disappoint—wonderfully cheesy and flavourful, with that same delicate batter. The salt and chilli chicken with salad was perfectly balanced—fresh, flavourful, and not overly spicy. The in-house steak pie was rich and hearty, wrapped in a thin, crusty pastry. To top it all off, the mushy peas were thick, sweet, and delicious. The place is great, a bit retro but very charismatic. I tried 5 times Fish & Chips in Carlisle in 5 days and this was the best. Clean operation environment, nice service, nothing to complain about. Good parking options. We will come again.

A handy stop off for a quality chip shop… This place is quirky but that’s why I like it, it really feels somewhat like an old American style diner - it could be because I somewhat remember it as a Little Chef but there’s just something that feels nostalgic about Johns Plaice. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by smiling waitresses who showed us to a table and brought us menus promptly, the menus by the way are huge! There’s a wide range of food here, not just fish and chips! I ordered a ham roll with chips and gravy, my partner ordered an egg mayo sandwich with chips and gravy, she got told there was no egg mayo left so she went for a tuna sandwich instead. The food was all really tasty, big portion sizes too! My ham roll was filled with thick, good quality ham and the bread was soft, my chips and gravy were good too - just very filling! My partner enjoyed her food too and we both left with happy bellies after a good feed on our way home. There’s ample parking here and they also offer takeaway which is great for if you just need a quick bite.

We got fish and chips for two to take away. The fish was a generous portion, freshly cooked with nice flaky meat and crispy batter. The chips also appeared to be home cut and were cooked perfectly. An excellent traditional chip shop convinient for travellers to and from the west of Carlisle. Highly recommended

Driven past johns plaice many times, finally got to sit in for cod and chips and mushy peas. It was all lovely, can't recall having a better fish and chips meal anywhere. Service is friendly, food comes up quick. I also had a thick chocolate milkshake. Better than McD's 😋 Price is ok, 20 quid each.
